Born on December 31, 1869, in a a small town in northern France. His family had a grain and paint business. He schooling was done in Saint- Quentin and then he went to study law in Paris. Soon he returned back to Saint-Quentin and found a job as a clerk. He hated the job and considered it to be pointless. By 1890, something strike his life with an illness that would alter Matisee's world of art.

Being a late bloomer, he spent nearly the 80's in his bed as he was weakened by severe appendicitis. In order to keep him occupied during his recuperation, his mother gave him a box of paints which became one of his hobby.

The 20 year old suddenly found his passion in art despite of never having interest in painting and art. Its only when he discovered painting he felt that it was something he could think of nothing else. Even though he hated the lawyer job, he still work in the evening and signed up for early-morning art classes. He then moved to Paris to study art and eventually got an admission to it. His new career was disapproved by his father but he never stop send him allowance.
